In order to raise awareness of the ease and effectiveness of including a charitable gift in your Will, RIDBC has joined the Include A Charity campaign, a group of over 130 Australian charities working together to highlight the vital role that gifts in Wills play in benefiting communities in need. You can help create a better world by including a charity in your Will.
A bequest to the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) in your Will is an excellent way of making a significant contribution, and helping to ensure that RIDBC can continue their amazing work.
Gifts left in Wills form the financial basis of most major Australian charities, such as RIDBC, and are absolutely essential for ensuring the good work RIDBC does continues into the future. A bequest also enables supporters to leave a legacy that honours the causes close to their heart.
Research shows that 3 out of 4 Australians are generous and support charities, but due to lack of awareness, less than 8% of Australians leave a gift or bequest to charity in their Will. If the percentage of Australians making a bequest were to increase to just 12%, an additional $440 million would be created for charities in Australia every year to help them continue their amazing work.
Bequests are:
- essential in providing much-needed funds to charities such as RIDBC
- effective and easy to include in your Will
- a generous way to leave a legacy that honours causes close to your heart

What is a bequest?
A bequest is when you make a gift of personal property, such as cash, real estate, a car, shares etc, to a named person or organisation in your Will.
There are different types of bequests – you can leave something specific (such as a house), you can leave a proportion or percentage of your estate, or you can leave the residual of your estate after giving specific gifts to individuals or organisations.
RIDBC welcomes bequests of any type.
How can I leave a gift to charity and look after my family at the same time?
RIDBC is an organisation primarily about families. We strongly encourage our bequestors to ensure that they look after their family first in their Will. Many people do this by leaving a proportion of their estate to RIDBC (such as 20 or 30%), and the larger proportion to their family.
We suggest you talk over your wishes with your family and with a professional such as a lawyer or trustee company before making your Will.
How do I prepare a Will?
For a will that covers everything you need it to, it is better to engage the services of a professional will writer, solicitor or public trustee.
Wills are precise legal documents that are meant to determine the disbursement of your property in the way you wish. To be sure that your assets are distributed the way you wish, always seek professional help to prepare, or modify your Will.
How do I include a bequest to RIDBC in my Will?

How effective will my bequest be?
Legacies form the largest part of income for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children. Without them, we would have to reduce the number of children we help significantly.
Many people leave bequests for specific purposes. These often form the backbone of our capital projects for better facilities for children and families.
