Vision and hearing impairment affect individual children in different ways.
When they are combined with intellectual disabilities (and sometimes, physical disabilities), they can severely impede education, unless they are specifically addressed.
Some of the characteristics of children with multiple disabilities may include:
- Limited speech or communication.
- Difficulty in basic physical mobility.
- A tendency to forget skills through disuse.
- Trouble generalising skills from one situation to another.
- A need for support in major life activities (domestic, leisure, community, work).
RIDBC staff, including teachers and therapists, work closely with parents and other service providers to develop the skills of each individual child.
It is now recognised in Australia that children with multiple disabilities benefit just as much from cochlear implants, hearing aids and corrective lenses.
