To celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) invites local businesses, families and the community to come and enjoy a fun day out at the RIDBC Ability Day Fair on Thursday, 1st December.

The free event full of fun activities will be held at RIDBC, 361 – 365 North Rocks Road, North Rocks, from 11am – 2pm.

IDPwD is a United Nations (UN) sanctioned day held each year on Saturday, 3rd December. On this day, the whole world celebrates persons with disabilities and their full and equal inclusion in society.

The UN theme for this year is “Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want,” in reference to the Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs). The SDGs were adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2015 and they have several clear references to persons with disabilities. These references in the SDGs ensure that persons with disabilities will be included in the main international development agenda that will last until 2030.

RIDBC Garfield Barwick School Principal, Sandi Ambler, said the day recognizes the achievements and contributions of people with disability and the importance of making our communities more inclusive.

“We are very proud to support over 6,500 people with vision or hearing loss across Australia every year,” said Sandi. “This year, we would like to invite the community to come and enjoy a fun day out and celebrate International Day of People with Disability and the abilities of all our wonderful students at the RIDBC Ability Day Fair.”

The event has plenty of entertainment for all ages. On the day there will be a range of food stalls and family friendly amusements including face painting for the kids, singing and dancing performances from RIDBC students, roving puppet show, food stalls, BBQ’s, sporting activities, book stall run by Scholastic Australia, interactive cooking lessons and demonstrations, lots of games with prizes created by RIDBC students, and much more.

Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) is Australia’s largest non-government provider of therapy, education and cochlear implant services for people with hearing or vision loss, supporting thousands of adults, children and their families, each year.

As a charity, RIDBC relies significantly on fundraising and community support to continue to make a difference in the lives of people with vision or hearing loss.
