It is a dynamic, research-intensive university ranked in Australia's top 10. The University has an international reputation for expertise in innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

The University enjoys significant research and teaching partnerships with universities throughout Asia and the Pacific and in Europe, North America and Africa.

There are two main campuses, both of which have won national awards for architecture and sympathetic environmental management. The largest, set on a 140 hectare natural bushland site is at Callaghan, about 12 kilometres west of the Newcastle city centre.

The other, located on an 85 hectare site adjacent to national parkland, is on the Central Coast at Ourimbah, about half way between Newcastle and Sydney. It is part of an innovative joint venture between the University, the Hunter Institute (TAFE NSW) and the Central Coast Community College.

Undergraduate and postgraduate programs are delivered through five faculties:
•           Business and Law
•           Education and Arts
•           Engineering and Built Environment
•           Health
•           Science and Information Technology

The Faculty of Education and Arts External Website offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs that provide innovative and leading edge education.

Within the School of Education is the Centre for Special Education and Disability Studies External Website, built on campus in 1976. It not only provides the general community with outreach programs, intervention classes and early education programs but its academic staff provide much of the practical and theoretical components of programs such as the Master of Special Education.
