Education Assistants Supporting Children with Deafness/hearing impairment - PERTH

The 'Education Assistants Supporting Children with Deafness/Hearing Impairment' course will be conducted in Perth early in 2010. This course is intended to provide participants with the competencies required to assist in supporting learners with hearing impairment in the learning environment. The course would suit people already employed as Education Assistants or who are seeking employment in this role in the future.
Upon successful completion of the program participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of hearing impairment and its effect on learning,
- Use the knowledge of the role and duties of an Education Assistant working with a student with hearing impairment, and
- Apply skills and strategies to assist in the support of a learner with hearing impairment across a range of learning environments.

Mainstream teachers will benefit from this one-day workshop by gaining a deeper understanding of the characteristics,

hearing. Suggested practical classroom measures will be augmented by exploration of wider perspectives that

Deaf History Course

Centre for Special Education & Disability Studies Research Mini-Conference

This one-day event provides a showcase for the research being conducted within the Centre for Special Education & Disability Studies (CSEDS) at the University of Newcastle. The Centre comprises research staff from the Newcastle, Ourimbah and RIDBC Renwick Centre campuses of the University. New (?) Answers to Old Questions: Literacy Development in Deaf Learners (SYDNEY)

In this two-day workshop*, participants will be introduced to a framework for understanding literacy learning (i.e., reading and writing) in deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) individuals. Answers to long-standing questions about the nature of literacy development and effective instructional strategies will be explored throughout day one, with an emphasis on the changing context in the field (i.e., UNHS, cochlear implants, evidence-based practice). In day two, participants will receive training in Visual Phonics, a multimodal instructional tool used to assist deaf students in acquiring phonological skills. Instructional strategies for teaching reading and writing will be demonstrated and practiced focusing on the role and pedagogical application of Visual Phonics.

This twenty-week course in Unified English Braille (UEB), offered by distance education, introduces students to

of embossed Braille to print; and general formatting guidelines for the layout of Braille, including the layout of test

Visual Surveillance and Screening

This workshop will equip health professionals with the knowledge to be able to conduct childhood vision surveillance and screening in accordance with the NSW "My First Health Record".
Prereading of approximately 6 hours is required, prior to attending. A module will be sent at least 2 weeks ahead which covers the rationale for vision surveillance and screening; visual development; basic ocular anatomy; and tools for identification of signs of vision and eye problems through vision surveillance and screening.
The workshop will cover the practical skills required for vision surveillance and screening, drawing on the knowledge gained from the prereading module.

Visual Efficiency Training-Teaching Low Vision Skills to students with a Vision Impairment

The morning session in this practical course covers introductory techniques followed by an afternoon session learning more advanced techniques. Participants may attend either morning or afternoon sessions, or both. The introductory session involves basic guiding techniques, assistance with independent travel and in room familiarisation. In this course, Dr. Wolffe will focus on the soft skills required for success in work and adult life: an understanding of the impact of one's behaviors on others, hence the need for punctuality and attendance, following rules and instruction from others, working cooperatively with others, etc.; an appreciation and acceptance of others' differences, the ability to communicate assertively, the understanding of differences in the levels of relationships that one develops and maintains, an awareness of how social demands change over the course of time in relationships, and so forth. Without these soft skills, youth and adults with disabilities run the risk of not securing employment or; if they secure jobs, being unable to maintain employment. These are also the skills that enable youth and adults to establish life-long relationships with others.

This course will provide participants with the competencies required to assist in supporting learners with vision impairment.It will enhance the skills and knowledge of people employed or seeking employment as teacher aides, child care assistants or residential care assistants or who are otherwise engaged in assisting people who are vision impaired. Participants will gain an understanding of vision impairment and its effect on learning, examine the role and duties of a Teachers Aide, and apply skills and practical strategies (e.g. orientation and mobility) to assist in the support of a learner with vision impairment across a range of learning environments.

Centre for Special Education & Disability Studies Research Mini-Conference
When: Friday 8th October, 8.30am to 4pm
Presented by: Staff from RIDBC Renwick centre and the University of Newcastle
This one-day event provides a showcase for the research being conducted within the Centre for Special Education & Disability Studies (CSEDS) at the University of Newcastle. The Centre comprises research staff from the Newcastle, Ourimbah and RIDBC Renwick Centre campuses of the University. A range of research topics related to the education of children with special needs will be presented by academic staff and research higher degree students from across the School of Education, University Newcastle. This mini-conference will be of interest to a broad range of people with interests in special education and disability studies including classroom teachers, parents, post-graduate students (particularly country and interstate students), and those considering enrolling in postgraduate studies.

Visual Surveillance and Screening
When: Monday 18th October, 8.30am to 4pm
Presented by:Sue Silveira, Orthoptist and research fellow, RIDBC Renwick Centre
This workshop will equip health professionals with the knowledge to be able to conduct childhood vision surveillance and screening in accordance with the NSW "My First Health Record".
Prereading of approximately 6 hours is required, prior to attending. A module will be sent at least 2 weeks ahead which covers the rationale for vision surveillance and screening; visual development; basic ocular anatomy; and tools for identification of signs of vision and eye problems through vision surveillance and screening.
The workshop will cover the practical skills required for vision surveillance and screening, drawing on the knowledge gained from the prereading module.

Australasian Deaf Studies Symposium III 2008 DVD
The DVD of this 2-day symposium, which ran during september 2008, is now available for purchase.
A Keynote Address was given by Robert Adam (Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre, University College London, UK), with Dr Breda Carty, from RIDBC Renwick Centre chairing the event.
The Symposium focused on the concept of "Deaf Identity", and how it is evolving in a changing world. The two-day event is of special interest to Deaf people and their families, those who work with them, and researchers and teachers in the Deaf Studies field. The symposium provides an opportunity to re-examine this complex subject from a variety of different perspectives. The DVD features video footage from each session of the Symposium presented in its entirety with additional access to supplementary materials used during the session.
