Professional Education

Professional Education program of conferences, seminars, and workshops are available for teachers, therapists, professionals, and others who work with children with sensory impairments. Some can also be undertaken for credit towards post-graduate studies in sensory disability. The program often features national and international leaders in the field.

Braille for Beginners: Module 1

Presented by: This course is via distance learning, developed by Frances Gentle, Lecturer in Vision Impairment, RIDBC Renwick Centre

This course provides an introduction to braille for those who wish to learn the Braille alphabet, numbers and some simple Braille contractions. The content is presented in a series of self-paced lessons, using a printed training guide, a CD and accompanying online materials. Course participants may progress to Module 2 if they wish to become proficient in contracted (Grade 2) Braille.

Sign Language (Auslan) 1 and 2

Improving the Outcomes for Students with Vision Impairment in Mainstream Settings

Mainstream teachers will benefit from this one-day workshop by gaining a deeper understanding of the characteristics, expectations, and needs of students with vision impairments. They will also attain a heightened awareness of the potentially important role that they can play in improving the educational outcomes of vision impaired students. Suggested practical classroom measures will be augmented by exploration of wider perspectives that include the issues of literacy development, the use of technology and the opportunities for the students' social inclusion both in and out of class.

FlashSonar and the Elements of Perceptual Mobility: the basis for freedom

This series of free, interactive lectures has been created by the RIDBC Renwick Centre. It is aimed at anyone looking for an introduction to hearing impairment and the human auditory system.

There are eight lectures available. Topics covered include the anatomy of the ear, causes of hearing loss, types and degree of hearing loss, audiograms, problems experienced by people with a hearing impairment, hearing aids, Cochlear implants, hearing testing centres and tactics to help when communicating with people who have a hearing loss.

There are a range of resources available providing an overview of the history of braille and an introduction to the braille code. This e-learning site supports the Teacher Aide Vision Impairment Course. This course is offered as part of the continuing education program, RIDBC Renwick Centre. Please refer to CPE Calendar for next availble dates.

Upon signing up on the course, you will access to a series of modules which provide resources relevant to the teacher aide role in vision impairment, including topics on the Teacher Aide role, legal considerations, Blindness and Vision Impairment, etc. A Discussion Board will used for online discussion on the modules. It can also be used to discuss topics relevant to your work, chat with one another and receive messages from the course facilitators.
