All loans have a period of up to 4 weeks (except for videos / DVDs and 3-day loan items), and a maximum of 10 items can be borrowed. Parents and volunteers may borrow 5 items.
Loans are subject to recall and must be returned when requested. Failure to return recalled material may result in the loss of borrowing privileges. Members of staff who are undertaking study must use their student card to borrow course material.
What can I borrow?
All items can be borrowed in the Library apart from Reference items, Journals and some electronic resources.
Borrowing/Identification Cards
Students: Your student identification will be issued upon payment of fees. This card is also your Library card.
Staff: New RIDBC staff should fill out a staff registration form. A printed copy of this form is available from the Loans Desk.
Volunteers and Parents: Please fill out an external user registration form. A printed copy of this form is available from the Loans Desk.
How to Borrow
Take your selected items to the Loans Desk for processing.
Returning your Loans
Loans may be returned to the returned items chute at the Loans Desk. If you are visiting any University of Newcastle library, Renwick Centre items may also be returned there.
Renewing your Loans
There are 5 ways in which to renew your loans:
- via the web version of NEWCAT

- by telephoning the Library
- on request at the Loans Desk
- by email renwick@newcastle.edu.au
Please have your student ID card handy to quote your Library number (e.g., V123123123) when telephoning or emailing. Overdue items can only be renewed by the Librarian.
The following items cannot be renewed:
- Items recalled or reserved for another patron
- Short Loans/Reserve Collection material
How to Place a Hold (Reserve an Item)
Holds can be placed on items which are on loan to another borrower. On their return they will be put on the Holdshelf to await collection. If the item is not collected within 5 days, it will be returned to the Library shelves or the next hold will be activated.
How to Check your Holds
You may check to see if your holds are ready in the
web version of NEWCAT
by selecting "View your Library Record'. Type:
- Your name
- Your Library number
- Display REQUESTS
Clients can have up to 3 holds at any one time.
When you display an item in the web version of NEWCAT
you just click on the Request Item button and proceed to
enter your name, library number and pickup location.
The screen will display "REQUEST RECORDED" when complete.
"READY FOR PICKUP" will be displayed on the right hand side of the screen if the item is on the Holdshelf for you. You will be notified when your holds are available by email. You may also check by telephoning or asking at the Loans Desk.
Overdues and Fines
Renwick Centre Library items are not subject to fines if they are overdue. This does not mean you can retain items indefinitely as borrowing rights are withdrawn if you fail to return material.
If items are borrowed from Auchmuty, Huxley or Central Coast Campus libraries via Renwick Centre Library or direct, you will be subject to fines.
If Library material is lost or damaged, the replacement cost plus a processing fee will be charged.
