Helping children with disabilities

There's a wide range of ways in which children with sensory and other disabilities can be helped to communicate and strive for independence.

Some methods of assitance include:

  • Surgery and medical intervention, including vision correction or cochlear implants.
  • Adaptive equipment - highly sophisticated adaptive equipment can be used for communication (eg, electronic magnifying devices).
  • Making the best use of residual vision by providing good lighting, enlarged print or sympbols, avoiding reflective surfaces, and adjusting heights and angles on desks or tables.
  • Making the best use of residual hearing with the fitting of hearing aids.
  • Developing communication skills for students with hearing impairment through early auditory stimulation, vocal practice, amplification as required and constant exposure through the use of speciliased materials, such as object or texture boards, a form of an alphabet code or adaptations of lipreading and sign language.
  • Behavioural and social intervention.
  • Orientation and mobility training for students with vision impairment.
