The RIDBC Alice Betteridge School provides individual educational programs for students aged 4½-18 years who have significant hearing and/or vision impairment, as well as intellectual disability.
The school aims to help each student acquire the
- skills
- attitudes, and
- knowledge
to allow them maximum participation in their lives.
The school recognises the importance of families as the basic building block on which children develop new skills. Staff and parents are considered to be partners in a team, working towards developing each student's independence.
RIDBC Alice Betteridge School is internationally renowned for the quality of its approach to education of children with significant hearing and/or vision impairment, and intellectual disability.

Guiding philosophies
RIDBC believes each student:
- Has the potential to learn and develop.
- Is unique and worthy of respect regardless of talents, disposition and abilities.
- Has a right to personal privacy.
- Should be given the opportunity to exercise personal choice.
- Has a right to participate in age-appropriate and community referenced activities.
- Acquires skills through systematic instruction.
- Will only make significant progress when educational and therapeutic services are consistently provided and are fully accountable.
Programs
The curriculum at RIDBC Alice Betteridge School is responsive to the needs of each student.
It addresses their intellectual, social, physical, emotional, aesthetic and cultural development in a balanced way.
The curriculum is inclusive, flexible and provides learning that is coherent, active and social.
Respite care
Caring for a child with sensory, intellectual and sometimes other disabilities is a big commitment!
For this reason, we encourage families to take periods of respite care for their child, leaving themselves refreshed for this important responsibility.
The RIDBC Alice Betteridge School conducts a Respite and Recreation Service for the families of its students. Students are cared for by residential care workers in on-site facilities, and access the community to participate in a diverse range of recreational activities.
Respite care is offered after school, overnight and on weekends during school term.
Vacation Care Programs are run in five-day blocks during the January, July and October school vacation periods. Students may sleep over for the whole period or attend as day participants.
Emergency respite care can also be arranged.
