A school consultancy service is also available to schools to assist in their support of students with hearing and/or vision impairment. The Consultancy Service aims to provide consultancy to, and training opportunities for, school staff and students about hearing and/or vision impairment, the relative educational implications of that impairment, and strategies for effective inclusion.
This service involves a thorough evaluation of the student’s hearing and/or vision impairment and its impact on that student’s access to the curriculum. It consists of a two to three day visit to the school and may include a combination of the following:
- Advice to the school about ways in which to ensure appropriate access for the student.
- Observation of the student in class.
- Discussion with students about their support needs and concerns.
- A meeting with staff and parents to discuss any concerns they may have.
- Provision of information about available grants and support schemes.
- Where appropriate and with the permission of the family, access to assessments and advice written by specialist staff including audiologists, orthoptists and access consultants.
- A full report outlining strategies for assisting the child to fully access the regular curriculum.
- Ongoing telephone/email support as necessary.
