To celebrate National Literacy and Numeracy Week Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) Alice Betteridge School held its annual Literacy, Numeracy and Science Open Day on Wednesday 6 September. RIDBC Alice Betteridge School provides an environment in which students who have hearing and/or vision loss, as well as a level of intellectual impairment, receive a tailored education program to optimise their participation and learning.

“This day is an opportunity for students to showcase the great work they do and to celebrate their achievements,” explains Julie Kirkness, Principal, RIDBC Alice Betteridge School. “It also allows students to exhibit their hard work to parents, volunteers and special guests who attend on the day. Activities are organised by each class incorporating what the students have been learning in English, Mathematics and Science. Activities on the day included Science activities focusing on heat and horticulture, and Maths activities involving data collection.”

RIDBC is fortunate to have invaluable support from individual and corporate volunteers who contribute everyday to its clinical and educational services and with administrative support. Volunteers from Officeworks and St George Parramatta Branch were on hand at the RIDBC Alice Betteridge School Open Day to lend their support with the activities and the barbecue lunch.

St George Parramatta Branch is also a platinum sponsor for the Coleman Greig Challenge, an annual run, ride and walk in Parramatta Park that will be held on October 20. This year the event aims to raise $175,000 for RIDBC as well as My Westmead and St Gabriel’s School.

The Coleman Greig Challenge is seeking volunteers to assist on the day. If you want to know more about volunteering contact Nadine Kanaan at nadine.kanaan@ridbc.org.au
