RIDBC Volunteers recognised at local awards

RIDBC VolunteersRIDBC would like to thank its valued volunteers on International Volunteer Day, 5 December

This International Volunteer Day we say thanks to the fantastic volunteers who give so much of their time and expertise so that RIDBC can do more for those who need us.

This year’s theme is “Volunteer for an inclusive future”, an inspiring and relevant message for our volunteers. In 2019 we had 160 volunteers who dedicate their talents and time to support RIDBC. To our volunteers, thank you.

In addition to recognising all our volunteers for their hard work in a diverse set of roles, 18 RIDBC volunteers were nominated for a 2019 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award.

In a first for RIDBC, two of our volunteers have won a regional category taking them to the State Finals held on December 5.

  • Ebonie Sanderson - Young Volunteer of the Year for Southern Sydney

Ebonie has volunteered at RIDBC Garfield Barwick School for 3 years supporting the students to develop their hearing and speech. Studying Speech Pathology at the University of Sydney, Ebonie’s knowledge supports students with their classroom activities, such as reading aloud or focussed one-on-one tuition.

  • Sheliya van Buggenum - Adult Volunteer of the Year for Northern Rivers

Sheliya is a volunteer and client of RIDBC, having received a cochlear implant in 2015. To support new recipients through their respective cochlear implant journeys, Sheliya started a CICADA peer support group in the region. Sheliya has been volunteering at RIDBC Lismore for two years, supporting adult recipients.

This is a significant achievement and has set a strong foundation for coming years.

As well as individual volunteers we are fortunate to have a significant number of corporate volunteers at RIDBC, including Abacus who were finalists in the Corporate Volunteers award category.
